Ken Rice is often compared to Kenny G., Boots Randolf, and his personal favorite, King Curtis. He plays sax and sings great vocals from his heart with all of his undeniable “soul” . Be it OPEN ROAD the band, or the Ken Rice single “Simply Sax” the duo, Simply Sax & Keys, Simply Sax & Guitar (Dan Henderson) or His new trio with JD Pickney and Joe Simon, and yes the newest "Another" Open Road Band, people will be completely entertained at every gig, large or small. From the largest Auditorium to your back yard.
Ken Rice has played his incredible sax and/or sang with select members of the San Diego Symphony, Robert Gordy of Motown, The Stylistics, Little Richard, Poco, Billy Preston, Smoky Robinson, Harry Dean Stanton, Gloria Gaynor, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Depp, Slash, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes live in Berlin, Thelma Houston, Johnny Hodges, Cat Anderson, POCO, Freida Payne (Band of Gold) Jay McShan, Marvin Gaye (Golden Hall San Diego 1 year before his passing) The Chi-lites with Barry White in Germany.
Because he volunteers for many fund raisers in his community, On July 20th 2014, he was presented with THE PRESIDENT'S CALL TO SERVICE AWARD, and a letter of Congratulations signed by President Obama.
Ken Joined the US Army during the Viet Nam war. He was headed for special forces, and ready to be shipped out. His commanding officer walked by his tent one night and heard him quietly playing his saxophone. He went into the tent and asked him if he could put a band together. Ken Saluted and said "Yes Sir" told him he could because several of his Army buddies played musical instruments. Thus began The 7th Signal Brigade Communicators. He never fired a shot, backed up all the greats for USO shows and received a Presidential Citation for his service. His Music probably saved his life, and all those who joined his band.
Lead singer & Sax man, Ken Rice knows the music business and he is also the owner /operator / repair man at the Little Shop of Horns in Temecula 27780 Jefferson St for over 16 years. He did his apprenticeship at The Horn Connection in Hollywood where all the greats ( Kenny G, Boz Scags etc.) still purchase and repair their horns. He specializes in woodwind sales, lessons, repairs, and most importantly works at reduced rates for local schools and professionals. His business and musical references are enormous and can be verified.
